Private tutoring
We offer
private tutoring for all middle school, high school, and college mathematics
classes. We also prepare students
for the SAT, PSAT, and ACT, as well as for the SAT II Math Levels 1 and 2 and
for the Advanced Placement exams in Calculus. All private tutoring sessions are with Mel Nathanson,
Professor of Mathematics at the City University of New York.
Short Hills
Mathematics also provides mathematics enrichment for very bright students who
are excited about mathematics and want to learn advanced topics that are not
found in the standard school curriculum, or who want to skip a year of school
math and eventually be able to take AP Calculus in high school.
Dr. Nathanson
has many years of experience preparing students to succeed at the highest level
in SAT and Advanced Placement exams, and in their school mathematics classes. He has tutored many students from both
public high schools (such as Millburn and Livingston) and independent schools
(Pingry, Newark Academy, and others), and these students have done
extraordinarily well, not only with their test scores and school grades but
also with admission to highly selective colleges and universities.
Dr. Nathanson
is Professor of Mathematics at the City University of New York and an
internationally famous research mathematician. He is the author of more than 100 research papers in number
theory and related parts of pure mathematics, as well as many research
monographs and graduate-level textbooks.
He is a frequent visitor at the Institute for Advanced Study at
Princeton, and continues to lecture on his research at universities around the
world. He has supervised many
Ph.D. students in mathematics, and mentored many undergraduate math majors who
wanted to begin to do research in mathematics.
SAT Mathematics Classes at Millburn High
School
Each term we
offer an evening class at Millburn High School to prepare students to succeed
on the mathematics sections of the SAT, PSAT, and ACT. The math test requires Algebra II
as well as Algebra I and Geometry, and also includes problems on special
topics, such as Combinatorics, Probability, and Number Theory, that are not
always part of the standard high school curriculum. Our class begins with a
review of the mathematics that is needed for the exams, with an emphasis on the
special topics, and students proceed to solve a large number of SAT/ACT
problems of increasing levels of difficultly. Students learn test–taking strategies to improve their
scores. The emphasis of this course is not on gimmicks and tricks, but rather
on developing the skills needed to analyze mathematical problems and find their
solutions. Our goal is to teach students how to solve mathematics problems like
a mathematician. Students will not only improve their test scores, but also
benefit by doing better in their high school and college math classes.
Students will
be given an SAT mathematics review book, and will be assigned homework problems
and practice tests to prepare for each class session. In addition, the
instructor will be available before each class to answer questions and work
with students individually.
This course is
offered through the Millburn Adult School. The class is open to all high school students, and is not
restricted to residents of Millburn and Short Hills. However, class size is limited, and registration is on a
first-come, first-served basis. For more information, please call Dr. Nathanson at
